“Do you know who they are?” Sam put his breakfast dishes in the dishwasher and rinsed the sink.

“No. I’ve never seen the truck.” Levi smiled at his friend, ever the neat freak cleaning up after them both.

Pulling his laptop case from the counter and slinging it over his shoulder, Sam asked, “Are you going to the diner to talk to Viv and see what she knows?”

Levi frowned. “No. Not today.” He nervously pulled his jacket on and removed the keys from the little hook in the cabinet above the stove. “I still don’t know how to deal with that situation.”

Sam chuckled, “Chicken.”

“Yep.”

They each drove their vehicles to the office; they’d be going in different directions later on. Living just out of town and down a little lane gave Levi the solitude he wanted. After spending life on Army bases and in military towns, living among hundreds and thousands of people seemed incredibly unappealing when he’d gotten here. Now? He wasn’t sure he was happy with his decision.

They each parked at the curb in front of the office. Levi opened the door and immediately hung up his jacket and began making coffee for the others when they got in. It also helped to work off some of the nervous energy about seeing Sage after yesterday. Damn, he had to stop being an ass. He’d tossed and turned all night thinking about how he’d hurt her. The look on her face and her retreating back haunted him well into the early morning. Trouble was, he didn’t know how to fix it.

He flipped the switch to get the coffee brewing and walked to his desk. Sam had already set himself up at the second desk. He was tapping away on his laptop and seemed as if he was in his own world. Before he could sit, the door opened, and the lightning bolt that ran through him nearly knocked him to his feet.

Sage and Dirks walked in laughing. Dirks smirked at the look on his face and set a bag of pastries on the desk in front of him. Then he turned to Sam and said, “Look at our girl here; smoking hot, isn’t she?”

Sam whistled and Sage blushed. She put her hands on her hips and replied, “Dirks, don’t embarrass me. You promised.”

“You shouldn’t be embarrassed about what a fox you are.”

She turned to the coffeepot and poured herself a cup of coffee. She was stunning. Her long hair which was usually tied up in a ponytail, flowed softly over her shoulders, the lights from above highlighting it perfectly. She wore a deep burnished orange sweater that dipped to a deep V in the front and had laces made of the same material, crisscrossed closing the expanse. The material looked soft and molded to her lean body in the most provocative way. The jeans she wore showed off her fine ass and shapely legs. The brown boots had side buckles, the heels giving her some height. And if that wasn’t enough, she wore makeup which accented the almond-shaped, dark eyes he’d first noticed.
